Candidates who do not take the oral examination within twelve months will not be able to attend the oral examination.

Which certification is best?

The question cannot be answered until we know what “best” means. Best for what? How would we know it was “best” – i.e. what measures would we monitor in order to be able to say that one certification is better than another?

If Business Analysis was a legally recognised profession this would be relatively easy to answer. A doctor – for example – cannot practice without holding a set of recognised qualifications and can be prosecuted if they practice without them. There are no such legal restrictions on Business Analysts. Anyone at all can claim to be a Business Analyst and practice as one and have no formal qualifications of any sort at all – and indeed they do!

Without the legal restrictions to fall back on, how can “best” be measured?

Do employers have notion of what “best” is? A brief survey of the job market will tell you they do not: a minority of jobs will ask for “relevant professional qualifications”, though rather more will ask for a “relevant university degree”. Almost none will demand that any candidate must hold a certain professional qualification – it will be ‘desirable’.

So, finally, the answer comes back to the Business Analyst themselves: how are they going to define “best” and use it to select the “best” course? Uncannily like Business Analysis itself, in order to answer this the Business Analyst needs to analyse what their objectives for have certification are, and use that to define the requirements they have for certification, and so select the certification that best satisfies their requirements.

For example: suppose the Business Analysts determines that they want certification in order to boost their chances of landing Business Analyst positions. They should then survey the job market to find roles they would like to be able to apply for and see which certification is most commonly asked for. In the UK this is likely to be the Diploma in Business Analysis if any at all are specified. The most sought after ‘qualification’ is relevant experience, followed by a relevant university degree and thirdly (and usually optionally) a “relevant professional qualification”.

Another example: suppose the Business Analyst determines that they want certification in order to know more about Business Analysis. They need to find out which courses cover what material to the depth they want to go to: so they need to research the courses on the internet, canvass colleagues, look on www.ModernAnalyst.com, and contact the certification providers.

The Principles of Certification

If the objective of the Business Analyst for gaining the certification is to improve their education and ability to do Business Analysis, the question has to be asked about why bother with certification at all? Why not just read the books that are of interest and take relevant courses if it helps? Certification per se does not demonstrate mastery of a subject – the author of this article passed high school exams in maths that if he sat today would defeat him! All certification states is that on a certain day a certain person was able to answer enough of a certain set of questions in a particular way to allow exam markers to award a pass. Not really conclusive evidence of anything at all.

Another thought – what is the motivation of the certification providers? Perhaps they just want to improve the standards of Business Analysis? If that was the case why would they charge for the certification? Ok, so maybe it’s not that they just want to improve the standards of Business Analysis, perhaps they want to make money too. Nothing wrong with that – except who gave them the mandate to set up these certifications? It turns out no-one, they just decided to. And they are not inspected or audited by any independent authority. So they can make money out of something they have no mandate to do and are unchecked.

And a final thought: remember that Business Analysis is not a recognised profession like being a doctor. In fact, because of this there is no agreed and accepted definition of what a Business Analyst actually is. Lots of different people and organisations have lots of different ideas and suggestions, but there are none that allow anyone to challenge a Business Analyst and say “if you are a Business Analyst, how come you don’t do x, y and z” or “how come you haven’t got such and such a qualification?”. Even the has some of its Certificates for Business Analysts under different subject areas (e.g. all the details of the Certificate in Systems Modelling Techniques is not in the Business Analysis area of the website but the Systems Development area).

Take all of the above and we are left in a situation where several groups of people (certification providers in all their shapes and forms) have taken it upon themselves to offer arbitrary certificates and qualifications to accredit Business Analysts for which they have no recognised mandate to do so, are not audited by an independent regulatory body and charge the Business Analysts money for a certification in a “profession” (Business Analysis) which has no formally recognised and agreed definition!

Conclusions.
If you want certification to get a job, find out what you need before you apply for the job. Do the minimum to satisfy the job requirements.
If you want it to get educated, save yourself time and money and just do the education without the certification.

7. Prince -2

• What does PRINCE2 ™ stand for?
It stands for Projects in Controlled Environments (the 2 reflecting that this is the second version of it).
• Who developed it?
It was developed by the CCTA, which is part of the Office of Government Commerce, which in turn is part of the UK Government.
• Is it just intended for IT projects?
No. The original version of PRINCE was intended for IT, but the scope expanded, and the PRINCE2 ™ is intended for all types of project.

Introduction

The two Diplomas available in the BSD Scheme are:

Business Analysis
Solution / System Development
has been offering the qualification scheme since 1999. Since that time revisions have been made to the modules in order to ensure that the scheme offers a complete suite of products that are relevant for today’s market. Over the last 12 months, has received increasing interest in the Diplomas especially from overseas. As a result it has become apparent that the current structure does not meet the market demand for international markets.

Feedback from customers has highlighted two key requirements for the revised scheme:

More flexibility within the scheme to allow multiple routes to gain the Diploma
Multi-national teams need to be able to acquire the relevant Diploma using a consistent approach that is relevant worldwide.
has undertaken a review of the current scheme in order to define changes that will enable the BSD scheme to have an international reach.

How does this affect existing candidates?

There will be a greater choice of modules which can be taken and recognised within the Scheme. The existing qualification will remain relevant and, as more overseas candidates obtain the qualification, will have increased international recognition.

Candidates will be able to attend oral examinations under the existing scheme until 28th February 2011. Any candidate who is in the process of taking modules following the existing scheme will be required to complete their oral examination by the end of February 2011. Please note that 28 February 2011 will be the final date for the existing oral examination.

When will the new scheme be introduced?

The revised scheme is available immediately with the new oral examinations being available from 1 February 2010. There is a transition period of 12 months, giving Exam Providers and their candidates sufficient time to adjust their programmes at their own convenience.

Business Analyst Qualifications - What you need
The business analyst profession is a relatively new one, integrating elements from topics such as systems analysis, requirements engineering, software engineering, project management, as well as business and management theory. However the last few years has seen the publication of several books, promotion of many training courses, new qualifications and the emergence of the International Institute of Business Analysts (IIBA).

Until recently there were few professional independent qualifications for Business Analysts. In 2001 the was the first to introduce a range of qualifications at several levels aimed at professional business analysts.

The administers several examination schemes, popular ones being for: ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library), Software Testing, and Business Analysis. Other schemes are in IT Law, IT Project Management, and in Systems Development. Some of these schemes share modules with the Business Analysis qualifications.

qualifications are at three levels: Foundation, Practitioner and Diploma.

This covers the basics of business analysis: skills of business analysts, some business strategy, stakeholder management, requirements elicitation and documentation, business process modelling, simple UML modelling, and change management. The syllabus and examination are very closely based on the book “Business Analysis” edited by Debra Paul and Don Yeates and published by the British Computer Society (available from Amazon at about £25). The exam is a 40 question, one hour multiple choice exam. Each question offers 4 alternatives, there is no negative marking and the pass mark is 26 / 40. This exam is readily available online at thousands of Pearson Vue centres throughout the world at price of about £120. Several companies offer training as a 3 day course, some of these are accredited by the although it is not necessary to have taken an accredited or, indeed, any course to the take the exam. You should be warned that the exam does require very specific knowledge based on the above book. Metadata Training are developing an online training package, to accompany the Business Analysis book containing online lectures, case studies and sample questions and exams to prepare aspiring business analysts for the foundation exam. This course will be soon available at www.BusinessAnalysisCourses.com

Foundation Business Analysis Exam Tips

Advice on taking the multiple choice Foundation in Business Analysis certification exam.

You should study the book very carefully as the exam treats every word and diagram in the book as if it was an absolute truth about business analysis. Sometimes this leads to rather obscure questions. As you are not penalised for your mistakes; if you don’t know the answer you should eliminate the definitely incorrect and guess the most likely from the remaining answers. You should attempt all 40 questions – you will have plenty of time – most candidates finish in less than 45 minutes. Resist the temptation to rework answers. Research on the results of multiple choice examinations suggests that when students return to previous questions they often undo a previously correct answer. The first, more intuitive, answer is usually the correct one.
You can purchase a sample paper from the – be warned – we were sent a paper that contained 40 questions and they sent an incorrect set of answers. They charge £20 for these 40 sample questions and, in our opinion this does not represent good value for money – no explanations are provided for the answers so it hard to check why you have gone wrong.

If you take the exam online then you will get your pass / fail result immediately. Your actual score will be provided by the when they send you the Certificate – this will normally take 2 or 3 weeks. You can take the exam as many times as your ego and pocket will stand.

Business Analysis Practitioner Level Certificate Exams

exam providers send your results to, notify you of the result including your mark (upto 6 weeks after the exam – often much sooner), and send you the certificate (upto 8 weeks)
A variety of qualifications are offered in business analysis topics. The practitioner exams always follow the same format: you are given a scenario describing a business area on which you have to answer questions relating to the analysis topic chosen. Before starting the exam proper you have 15 minutes reading time – you can read the exam paper, any notes or books that you have. It is often useful to refer to practice exam papers and any suggested answers — Metadata provide you with two sample papers and answers for each certificate topic. During this time you are not allowed to write anything nor are you allowed to use a highlighter.

Normally the questions total 50 marks with a pass mark of 25 /50 – 50%. There is no choice of questions so you should attempt all to maximise your chance of success. Marks for questions are not normally equally divided – question 1 could be 10 marks; question 2, 20; question 3, 8; and question 4, 12. Each question usually relates to a syllabus topic but is often divided into several parts. You have one hour to complete your answers so should normally allow about 1 minute per mark – so you spend about 10 minutes on a 10 mark question. Time is often a problem and you will need to think and write quickly.

All practitioner level exams are set by your BA course provider and are moderated by independent auditors from the. They try to set a common standard that applies to all exams and ensure that exams are covering the syllabus and exam providers are marking fairly. However each exam provider will have written the exam to fit with their own courses and will, to some extent, be preparing you for that exam.

Practitioner Business Analysis Exam Tips

You should talk to your course provider about the style of answering questions. Metadata Training give their candidates the following advice:

1 make sure you answer every part of every question.

2 make your answers as specific to the scenario as you can

3 use information given in the scenario as far as possible, most of the answers should be provided with in the scenario (it can be useful to highlight or mark the question paper — but you can only do this in your writing time). Sometimes you will need to rely on your general knowledge related to the business scenario given and then you can make up reasonable answers. (For example: a Business Analysis Essentials exam using an estate agency case study might ask you to do a PESTLE analysis (6 marks) — under Economic; recession, or falling house prices would be a reasonable answer (but it probably would not be mentioned in the question if that was the prevailing economic climate).

3 bullet point style answers are acceptable if you find these quicker to write, but flowing prose is also acceptable

4 don't worry about the legibility of your writing or of your diagrams, we will have seen worse!

5 you have to write in ink and we recommend you just cross out any errors

6 when drawing diagrams (e.g. use case diagrams or business activity models) show as many items as you reasonably can. You will not get penalised as long as these are reasonable, and are justifiably within the scope of the scenario. The marker will be following a marking scheme which will reward certain specific items. Thus a use case diagram in an exam worth 12 marks could expect 8 marks for use cases, 2 marks for actors, and 2 marks for communication channels. If your diagram only shows 4 use cases then, even if these are perfect, you can only get 4/8 marks for this part. However if your diagram shows 10 use cases of which 6 roughly correspond to those in the model answer and the other 4 are reasonable but do not correspond then you will score at least 6/8 and possibly more.

7 some questions ask for a number of specific points e.g. identify 2 stakeholders (2 marks) if you have time it is often useful to add in 2 or 3 more if there are other possibilities in the scenario - as long as they are reasonable - you then are more likely to coincide with what is in the model answer.
