ITIL V3 Qualification Scheme

The ITIL Version 3 (V3) Qualifications scheme provides a modular approach to ITIL certification, and is comprised of a series of certifications focused on different aspects of ITIL Best Practice, to various degrees of depth and detail.

There are four levels of certification within the V3 scheme:

ITIL V3 Foundation in IT Service Management
ITIL Intermediate Level - Service Lifecycle & Service Capability Streams
ITIL V3 Expert Certificate
ITIL V3 Master Qualification
The modular, tiered approach to certification not only offers increased flexibility to candidates relating to the disciplines or areas of ITIL that they are able to study, but generally makes ITIL certification more accessible and achievable.

Foundation Level

The entry level for the scheme is the ITIL V3 Foundation in IT Service Management, and upon successful completion a candidate becomes eligible to take further V3 certifications within the scheme.

Intermediate Level

The ITIL Intermediate Level is the core of the qualifications scheme, and the modular construct allows candidates to select specific Intermediate certifications which are of interest to them, based on their own individual educational or career-driven requirements.

The Intermediate level provides two specific streams of education – the Service Lifecycle "Management" focused stream, and the Service Capability "Process" focused stream.

Candidates can choose to take as few or as many ITIL Intermediate modules as they require over time and at their own pace, building a portfolio of certifications tailored to their own individual requirements.

ITIL Expert Certificate

The ITIL V3 Expert Certificate is awarded to candidates in recognition of their achievement of ITIL V3 certifications. This level of certification also recognizes qualifications from earlier ITIL versions and through endorsed Complementary Qualifications.

The Expert level is supported by the ITIL V3 Credit System which explains how credits are awarded to candidates for successful completion of modules of ITIL study.

ITIL V3 Foundation Certificate in IT Service Management

The Foundation Level of the ITIL Qualification Scheme focuses on providing knowledge and comprehension of the key concepts, structure, terminology and processes of ITIL.
This entry level certification offers candidates a general awareness of the key elements of the ITIL V3 Service Lifecycle, including the linkages between Lifecycle stages, the processes used and their contribution to Service Management practices.
Upon successful completion of the education and examination components related to this certification candidates can expect to gain knowledge and understanding in the following areas:
• Service Management as a practice
• Service Lifecycle
• Key Principles and Models
• Generic Concepts
• Selected Processes
• Selected Roles
• Selected Functions
• Technology and Architecture
• ITIL Qualifications Scheme
Successful completion of the Foundation certificate also fulfils the pre-requisite entry criteria for the next level of study within the ITIL qualifications scheme, the ITIL V3 Intermediate Level.

Target Group for the ITIL Foundation Certificate

The ITIL Foundation Certificate in IT Service Management is primarily aimed toward the following:
• those who require a basic understanding of the ITIL framework;
• those who need understanding of how ITIL can be used to enhance the quality of IT service management within an organization;
• IT professionals or others working within an organization that has adopted and adapted ITIL who need to be informed about, or contribute, to an ongoing service improvement programme.
However ITIL certification is open to any individuals who may have an interest in the subject.
The ITIL Foundation Certificate in IT Service Management is not intended to enable the holders of the certificate to apply the ITIL practices for Service Management without further guidance.

Format of the ITIL Foundation Exam
The Foundation examination tests candidates in their ability to understand the basic concepts, describe them and demonstrate basic comprehension of the ITIL practices.
The Foundation examination consists of 40 multiple choice questions, where only one option can be correct and will be awarded a mark. The pass mark for this examination is 65% (26/40) and the exam duration is 60 minutes.

ITIL V3 Intermediate Level

The ITIL Intermediate Level offers two principle streams of education; Lifecycle and Capability - each with their own series of certifications - and a final rationalization module, Managing Across the Lifecycle.
Each of the Intermediate certifications provides candidates with the knowledge, skills and competencies required to apply or manage the application of specific areas of ITIL Best Practice, in a Service Management environment.
The ITIL Lifecycle Stream
The ITIL Lifecycle Stream consists of five individual certifications, each based on one of the Service Lifecycle phases. This stream will be of interest to candidates looking to focus on the Lifecycle itself, the use of process and practice elements used within it and the management capabilities needed to deliver quality Service Management practices.
The ITIL Capability Stream
The ITIL Capability Stream consists of four individual certifications, which focus on a series of clustered process activities, their execution and use throughout specific phases of the ITIL Service Lifecycle. This stream will be of interest to candidates who wish to gain a deep level understanding of V3 processes and roles, how they are implemented and how they interact.
ITIL Managing Across the Lifecycle
The ITIL Managing Across the Lifecycle Certification completes the Intermediate stream, by focusing on the ancillary knowledge required to implement and manage the necessary skills associated with use of the Lifecycle practices. This particular module is aimed at those candidates interested in achieving ITIL V3 Expert Level, for which this module is a key requirement.
Selecting Intermediate Modules
The flexibility of the V3 scheme means that candidates can choose modules based entirely on their own individual certification requirements, which can be focused on their current / prospective job roles, or on their own personal educational objectives.
Candidates can take as few, or as many Intermediate qualifications as they require, as each of the Intermediate qualifications is recognized by the industry in their own right, and will be extremely useful to candidates based in, or working towards, a role in IT or Service Management.
Developing an ITIL Specialism
The modular structure of the Intermediate level allows candidates to focus their studies and certifications on specific, targeted areas of the ITIL Service Lifecycle; developing a specialism within a defined area or discipline as follows;
• Developing an ITIL Lifecycle Stream specialism will help candidates focus on the management aspects of IT Service Management, gaining the knoweldge and skills to coordinate all activities under a specific Service Lifecycle phase
• Developing an ITIL Capability Stream specialism will help candidates gain the technical level of knowledge and skills required for detailed execution and implementation of specific ITIL processes, or
• Candidates can also specialize in an entire Service Lifecycle phase, by selecting certifications from both streams which cover the same general processes and activitites, to gain a holistic view of an entire stage from both the a high level management and the detailed, technical perspective
As a candidates career or educational requirements shift or mature over time, they can then continue to gain useful and relevant ITIL certifications under the V3 scheme, by branching into other ITIL disciplines and Intermediate certifications, focusing on other phases or process areas within the Service Lifecyle spectrum.

ITIL V3 Expert Level

The ITIL Expert level of certification is aimed at those individuals who are interested in demonstrating a superior level of knowledge of ITIL Version 3 (V3) in its entirety.

Achieving this level of ITIL certification will benefit a candidate in both their personal and professional development, by aiding career advancement and progression within the IT Service Management field.

Candidates who achieve ITIL Expert level will also satisfy the pre-requisite entry criteria for the ITIL Master Level; the highest level of certification within the V3 scheme.
Achieving ITIL Expert Level
The V3 qualifications scheme offers a modular approach to certification. In this scheme, candidates are free to select from a variety of certifications which focus on targeted areas of the ITIL Service Lifecycle to varying degrees of depth and specialism.

The flexibility of modules available means that candidates are free to tailor their own individual certification portfolio to their own personal and professional requirements.

For those candidates who decide to aim for ITIL Expert, the possible module combinations are many; however, there are some key requirements all candidates must meet, which are:
1. All candidates must hold the V3 Foundation certificate or V2-V3 Bridge equivalent
2. A total of 22 credits minimum must be achieved from ITIL V3 Intermediate Level or earlier ITIL certifications
3. The Managing Across the Lifecycle module must be taken and passed once 17 credits have been earned, and
4. Candidates should achieve a balanced knowledge base across the full ITIL V3 Service Lifecycle.
These requirements will ensure that all candidates who achieve ITIL Expert have successfully completed a series of certifications which span all V3 disciplines consistently.

ITIL® V3 Master Qualification

As IT Service Management grows in maturity, so too do the requirements for developing and recognizing capable individuals in the industry.
The need for increasing levels of IT Service Management knowledge and skills can be seen in the increasing number of jobs that require these skills, the emergence of ITSM academic programmes, and formal professional and career frameworks for ITSM practitioners.
The ITIL Master qualification meets these growing needs by focusing on the experienced levels of the industry, testing the capabilities of senior IT service managers, executives and practitioners.
Focus on Practice
In an industry that values the ability to work in the real world, advanced qualifications need to test more than application to hypothetical cases.
Candidates for the ITIL Master qualification must select one or more real world situations and explain how they were able to apply their knowledge of ITIL to implement real solutions. Testing is performed by assessing a written submission describing real-world assignments, augmented by oral examination.
Target Group
The ITIL Master qualification is aimed at people that are experienced in the industry – typically, but not exclusively, senior practitioner, senior consultant, senior manager or executive, with 5 or more years' relevant experience. All candidates must hold the ITIL Expert qualification.
Curriculum
Since every candidate will have a unique range of experience, principles, methods and techniques that they choose to apply, it is not possible to define a fixed syllabus, instead, the ITIL Master qualification allows candidates to determine their own field of study based on ITIL.
A Requirements and Scope document will guide candidates through the process of defining their field of study and which elements of ITIL they can include.
Achieving the ITIL Master Qualification
The steps for achieving the qualification are:
1. Candidates submit a Proposal describing the real life situation they intend to address and the elements of ITIL they will apply to this situation
2. Candidates prepare and submit a Work Package for assessment
3. Candidates attend an interview to support the Work Package assessment.
Learning Objectives
Although there is no fixed syllabus for this qualification, each candidate is expected to have an in-depth knowledge of the areas of ITIL that they have selected for inclusion in their Proposal and Work Package. Candidates are also expected to demonstrate management and planning skills in support of the areas of ITIL that they select.
Why Obtain the ITIL Master Qualification?
• Senior ITSM practitioners and managers are better able to differentiate themselves in an industry that requires ever-increasing demonstration of competence
• Experienced practitioners and managers can identify key areas of study and improvement as they prepare for the qualification
• Organizations will gain value from the benefits achieved during the assignment, and can benefit from the coaching received during preparation of the Work Package
• Organizations that have ITIL Masters working for them can claim a level of demonstrable quality, since projects in that organization were independently evaluated
• The ITIL Master qualification can be used to differentiate candidates for senior roles
The ITIL Master qualificaiton is currently in pliot phase and further information regarding the qualification and its release date will be available later in 2010.
