Overview
TMMi, the successor of TMM, is first published in 2008. Since then, a lot of organizations have used it to assess or improve their test processes. During this workshop participants will gain insight into the need and added value of test process improvement, understand the background and structure of the TMMi model. Furthermore the participants will get general knowledge of the TMMi maturity levels extensive knowledge of the TMMi process areas. The participants will also gain insight on how TMMi assessments are performed .

A TMMi® assessment can provide:

  1. An internationally recognized certification at any of the levels.
  2. An intelligent look at your testing related quality processes
  3. A fully scalable review mechanism (Project / Program / Business Unit or Organization)
  4. A staged process improvement model
  5. A pragmatic and achievable process improvement roadmap which will support your organization's quality goals and objectives
  6. Demonstrate Return on Investment (ROI)

What is TMMi® – and Why Should You Care?
TMMi is the independent industry standard measure against which to assess software quality management and test processes within an organization. It focuses on defect prevention, not detection. Testing throughout the software development lifecycle, instead of only at the end, will allow you to identify and fix software errors more effectively, saving time and money and reducing time to market.

What is the Test Maturity Model Integration (TMMi) model?
The TMMi model provides a full framework to be used as an assessment/reference model during test process improvement, involving senior management sponsorship, which establishes a specific, technically competent test process group that represents relevant stakeholders to prioritise and guide test process improvement efforts. The model addresses all four cornerstones for structured testing (lifecycle, techniques, infrastructure and organization) and is underpinned by risk management.

Why is TMMi a necessary model?
TMMi concentrates on helping to move organisations from defect detection to defect prevention, positively impacting the time, cost and quality of software delivered, and meeting the challenges of today’s management of delivering more for less. It is about ensuring practices are fit for purpose and appropriate, using existing good practices, enhancing weaker areas and filling in gaps to achieve the corporate objectives.

All candidates can take Exam in VUE/Prometric to get TMMi Professional Foundation .
The exam is 60 minutes (if the candidates native language is not the same as the exam language 75 minutes is allowed) made up of 40 multiple choice questions. Each correct answer is worth 1 point and a score of at least 65% (26 points or more). The exam is taken outside parametric / VUE as per students interest.

Does your organization

  1. Suffer from major release delays?
  2. View testing as a bottleneck at every stage?
  3. Find too many, and very often the most important errors in production?
  4. Have little idea how much testing (and poor quality) is costing?
  5. Utilize third parties that don't deliver the anticipated benefits?

This model is popular in all other parts of the globe. In your experience, what type of return on investment have you seen from its implementation that will make the North American market take notice?
 40% savings achieved after changes made to ensure certification to Level 2
 A U.K. bank saved 8% of their entire IT budget and improved development output by 12%
 An insurer saved £440,000 on a £2m project
 A retailer saves at least 12% on every project after implementing TMMi-based improvements
 A test services company increased its efficiency by 8%
 A bank decreased the overall testing estimates for the current release by 32%.
 Cost of testing was reduced by 28%.
 10% reduction in development costs
These figures are not out of the ordinary; in fact, we regularly see these types of of benefits when the recommendations from a TMMi assessment are implemented.

Major Misconception #1: TMMi will not work with the existing process frameworks we already use in-house!

Answer: False. Think of the TMMi as an extension to the existing quality model frameworks in-house. Remember, most quality models deal with the entire lifecycle. That typically covers planning, requirements, design, and then test. TMMi takes the test phase of your lifecycle and adds the level of rigor required to ensure quality prevention, not quality detection.

Major Misconception #2: TMMi will only work in a waterfall environment.

Answer: Really? How many organizations these days strictly do waterfall. Okay, some, but not many. Most organizations do some form of Agile these days - even if it is a hybrid version. Agile teams do testing too. Think about the following: you'd have a policy around performing testing, you'd have project plans (albeit they may be called something else or included in a backlog or release plans), you'd execute test, you'd monitor the results, you'd conduct peer reviews, you'd conduct non-functional test. Do these things seem reasonable? Do they sound like things that may be included in the sprint tasks or in the definition of done? TMMi works in more than just a waterfall environment.

Major Misconception #3: The TMMi model will add way too much time and effort to an already stretched budget and schedule.

Answer: Like most models, it isn't the framework that is bad, it's the implementation. You can take any framework and load it up with excessive process. Think of model implementation as a plate of nachos. The framework is the chips, it's simple and serves as the foundation. It's up to you how heavy you make the toppings (implementation). The purpose of the TMMi framework is to give you structure that provides value and aids in producing a quality product through the prevention of defects - not trying to find the defects under layers of development after it's too late.

Key Points to Reach TMMi Level 5

This paper describes key points to achieve TMMI level 5 in a practical way for a new test organization. It also summarizes Aksigorta Test team experiments about test process improvement with guidance of TMMI framework.

We can list these key points that we have found out during our test process improvement experiments as Templates, Test manager tools, Project management tools, Weekly review meetings, Risk based test plan preparation, Yearly and weekly trainings, Certification, Test automation tools, Convert everything to numbers for measurability, CMMI relation, Team buy-in and creating a culture.

For all work products such as test master plan, risk analysis, review reports, a template must be ready to use in organization document library. This helps team members to keep work according to test process standards.

A test manager tool should be used to record and track all test works. Especially for requirement - test case - test run-bug traceability, a test manager tool must be used effectively. This is also very important for measurability and self monitoring for team.

Project management tool is a key tool to follow overall project plan and to see clearly integration of test phase with other software development phases. It also gives ability to compare planned and actual work difference. This measurement gives certain ideas on health of test process.

Weekly review meetings are a must for checking test process status and giving feedbacks to team members of test team. We designed an assessment model based on score. We worked on success score of projects at weekly review meetings. This score system made everything clear about health of process for all team members and it made possible to make corrections for weak side of test process.

Risk based test plan preparation helps to test engineers to see test engineering as a separate professional area of software development. It adds value to test engineering profession and it helps to creation a focus for testing software in a right and effective way.

We planned and applied yearly and weekly trainings. Yearly trainings from professional training providers are useful to take industry best practices into team. It helps to team to see how their knowledge maturity. Internal weekly trainings keep each team members’ knowledge fresh and give ability share new best practices with everyone in team. Certification is useful to see knowledge level with objective perspective.

Test automations tools are very important to increase maturity of test team. It gives clear understanding to test engineers on non-functional testing with performance test automation. It reminds to test engineers that role of test engineer is not only limited with functional testing. Functional test automation is another powerful tool that adds value to test engineering.

Measurability is a must for TMMI level 4 and 5. If you can’t measure a process, you will improve it with unseen gaps. You should have willing to convert everything to number. Numbers such as number of requirements, number of test cases, number of defects, test process scores, project plan records, review ratings make test process measurable and predictable.

If you want a whole software development maturity, it won’t be easy to think TMMI without CMMI relation. We certainly realized that we can’t reach TMMI level 5 before reaching CMMI level 5. Two models are tightly coupled. They use their work products as input to their sub processes.

Like for all other models team buy-in and culture is another key point for high level test process maturity. Team must have faith in benefits of process improvement for company and for their career improvements.
